The Language and Social Norms of Tuscany

The main language spoken in Tuscany is Italian, which is the official language of Italy. The vast majority of the population here speaks Italian. Of course some people also speak English, but it’s good not to count on it. It may be useful to look up some basic phrases or words to help you in your travels. There are many books you can pick up that offer basic phrases, and it’s not expensive to get an electronic language translator. They usually cost less than $50. Some of these are “speaking” so you can hear how the words sound, and many of them will help you construct sentences – to ease your trip.

While Italians are gracious and helpful, you may find that they are willing to be even more helpful if you are willing to at least try and speak Italian and understand it while there. So, it’s advisable to go this route rather than relying on them speaking your language. After all, you are traveling abroad and being with a different native tongue is one of the great joys of travel!

The Tuscany language is spoken in Tuscany. Standard Italian is based on Tuscan. Of course there are some differences, but as a traveler, you don’t really need to concern yourself with it.
