Not only is Tuscany a wonderful region with Florence, Lucca, Siena, the Chianti Wine Region and a wonderful landscape, but it also is home to many natural hot springs. These Tuscany thermal baths range from very modern to rustic.
There are many hot springs in the southern part of Tuscany near Monte Amiata. The towns and villages that have hot springs sometimes import those natural waters into a traditional swimming pool environment. These Tuscan thermal baths are typically outside, and they are only open during the warmer months. However, most thermal baths are more like spas with a medical angle. They are typically inside, and you can visit them all year long.
Spas are different for many Europeans than for Americans. In fact, in some countries everybody gets two weeks a year in a spa, and it’s paid for by a national health plan! Talk about living it large! You don’t have to have a doctor’s note to enjoy the rejuvenation that the Tuscan thermal baths offer, however. Some do come with a doctor’s prescription to get treatments to help with their ailments. However, you can enjoy massage in Tuscany and other spa treatments in Tuscany at the thermal baths to help melt away your cares. Some of these facilities include an on-site restaurant, so you can enjoy the whole day from baths to treatments to food.
Some of the towns with thermal baths aren’t in the typical Tuscany traveler’s plans, however some of them are worth checking out if you are interested in taking advantage of these naturally occurring wonders.
One popular place with thermal bath is called Montecatini Terme, which is not far from Florence. Near Chiusi there is Chianciano Terme. The whole town is quite spa focused with visitors there just for that reason. There are many restaurants and hotels in these towns catering to spa-goers.
If you are looking for towns that are more focused on the relaxation side of the spa experience and don’t want a doctor’s prescription to attend, there are several good places to check out in southern Tuscany. San Casciano dei Bagni is a place with a very modern spa. Saturnia is another town with a modern facility. If you stay at Hotel Post Marcucci in Bagno Vignoni, you can get day passes for the natural pools of hot springs.
If you want a more rustic experience, there are also places in Tuscany that have open-air thermal baths that are out in nature. The upside to these Tuscany natural hot springs is that they are totally natural and free hot springs. However, many of them are very popular with both locals and tourists. So they can get very crowded.
