Tuscany Transportation

Featured Story
Tuscany Transportation

Tuscany is a rich cultural region in Italy and a prime place that tourists enjoy visiting so they can partake in the breathtaking landscapes, art, culture and culinary traditions.

Tuscany transportation includes a variety of options from airline travel, trains, buses, taxis and even alternative modes of transportation. So, no matter your goal, you’ll find an easy way to get around in Tuscany. There are many cities to explore in this gorgeous region, so you’ll want to make sure you understand all of the travel options in Tuscany before departing on your trip. There are many transportation options in Tuscany based on your needs, your travel style and even your budget requirements.

Thankfully, Tuscany is not a difficult place to reach with modern transportation and easy access from a variety of international airports. There are actually two international airports in Tuscany. There is Pisa’s Galileo Galilei International Airport and the Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport, known also as Pertola. These airports are fairly nearby each other – only about 80 km away from each other. That amounts to just under 50 miles apart.

Each airport connects flights from the major airports located in cities across Europe. However, Pisa may be easier to fly into, given the fact that it takes most of the European flights.

If you are a traveler from North American and thinking about your travel budget, one thing to bear in mind is that it may be less expensive to take a flight that stops in a different European city rather than trying to fly directly into Tuscany. Some more affordable options can include stopping in London or stopping in Paris, and then proceeding to use Ryan Air to get a flight into Pisa. Ryan Air is a discount European airline noted for its inexpensive flights between various European cities. One drawback to this option is that you will likely need to travel to a different airport, as Ryan Air departs from the smaller secondary airports. However, it can help save money if that’s a concern.

Once it’s time to leave Tuscany, you’ll have a variety of options to get to the airport to take off for home.

You can reach the airport in Pisa directly on the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno dual carriageway (look for the exit marked “Pisa Centro-Aeroporto”), then to the Genova-Rosignano A12 motorway (look for the exit named “Pisa Centro”), then on to the road SSI (look for “Aurelia.”)

You also can reach the Pisa airport by train. The Pisa airport terminal connects to the Pisa Central Station directly by train. There are many trains that link to the Pisa central station. Additionally, there are a variety of trains linking the Pisa airport to the main train station in Florence. The railway terminal is just outside of the hall in the airport. There also are an abundant number of buses or taxis that can take you from interior of Pisa to the Pisa airport.

If you are using the airport in Florence, you can reach it directly on the Firenze-Pisa A11 motorway along with the AI, which also is known as “Autostrada del Sole.” This particular airport in Florence is near the northwestern edge of the city. You likely will be in the center of Florence, so you will want to consider a bus, taxi or shuttle to reach the airport.

You can cross the entire region of Tuscany in a matter of a few hours. It all depends on your starting point and destination when you decide what is most convenient for travel. Most of the smaller villages in Tuscany can only be reached by bus or car – and those schedules may be challenging. Most of the smaller roads have a single lane that goes one way in each direction. The landscape here is beautiful, but with it comes many hills and roads that go up and down. You’ll want to take plenty of care and time when driving.

Tuscany’s major roads are the A1, A11 and A12.

If you are planning to stick with Tuscany’s major cities the best way to travel between them is likely the train. The major cities have easily accessible train stations. The trains also make sightseeing fairly easy and help you avoid the hassle of parking, paying for gas and the other headaches that can come with rental cars.

One nice travel itinerary in Tuscany is to visit some small villages and some larger cities. Just be sure you check the bus schedules prior to departing, so you can accommodate the travel time in your schedule.
