The Archbishop of Florence, Giuseppe Betori, is one of seven Italian cardinals recently appointed to a conference called a consitory. The cardinals were appointed by Pope Benedict XVI.
Italy isn’t the only nation with representation in this special Catholic appointment. The Pope also appointed cardinals from other nations such as India, the United States, Canada and others. Europe is well represented with 16 total cardinals in this consistory.
Pope Benedict XVI made this special announcement at a Mass held for the Epiphany.
The announcement by the Pope was well received by the numerous Catholics in Florence. Bertori thanked the Pope for the appointment. His remarks suggest that he feels this is an honor not just for himself but for the city of Florence, as well.
